The 2023 World Cup in Brazil began with a sponsorship invasion by bookmakers wearing Serie A team jerseys. As we have shown here, 19 out of 20 elite clubs have commercial agreements with gambling sites. Cuiabá is the only one who currently has no sponsorship in the field.
Eleven clubs are sponsored by bookmakers: América-MG (EstrelaBet), Atlético and Fluminense (Betano), Athletico Paranaense, Bahia and Goiás (Esportes da Sorte), Botafogo (Parimatch), Cruzeiro (Betfair), Fortaleza (Novibet), Santos and Vasco (Pixbet), Sao Paulo (Sportsbet.io).
In other areas of the uniform there are sponsors: Grêmio (Esportes da Sorte), Corinthians and Flamengo (Pixbet), Coritiba (Dafabet), Internacional (EstrelaBet) and Red Bull Bragantino (MrJack.bet).
british ban
Meanwhile, English clubs playing in the Premier League are banned from displaying betting company sponsorships on the front of their shirts from 2025. We also addressed this here in July 2022 when we initiated the discussion.
The truth is that the British took what appeared to be a sensible and necessary step at a time when the results of manipulation were becoming increasingly worrisome. But here in Brazil, no one seems very worried. Like it or not, these manipulations are closely related to sports betting. But no one cares about that.
An official statement from the Football Association (FA) last week confirmed that the measure was developed following consultations involving the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport as part of an ongoing review of current gambling legislation. The ad also aimed to curb the rise of gambling, a compulsion a person has to gamble.
Currently, eight teams will be directly hit by the ban: Bournemouth (Dafabet), Brentford (Hollywoodbets), Everton (Stake.com), Fulham (W88), Leeds (Sbotop) , Newcastle (Fun88), Southampton (Sportsbet.io) and West Ham (BetWay).
“Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to remove gambling sponsorship on the front of club shirts, becoming the first English sports league to voluntarily take such steps to reduce gambling advertising.
The league, its clubs and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have held extensive consultations as part of the government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation. The Brit is also working with other sports to develop new responsible gaming guidelines for sponsorships.
To help clubs wean themselves off gambling sponsorships, a collective agreement will start at the end of the 2025/26 season. “
