The former vice president of the European Parliament has been jailed

The Greek MEP, who was also expelled from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), is suspected of favoring Qatar and Morocco in exchange for money, although he has pleaded not guilty.

Former vice-president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili was released on Friday from Haren prison, near Brussels, after spending four months in prison, under house arrest with an electric bracelet.

Eva Kaili is the only suspect still at risk of the ‘Qatargate’ fraud, after two other suspects – Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella and former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri – were released on Thursday from prison with an electronic bracelet.

The Greek MEP, who was also expelled from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), is suspected of having favored Qatar and Morocco in exchange for money, after pleading not guilty.

On Wednesday, Belgian investigating judge Michel Claise already decided to transfer Kaili to house arrest, which happened today. The friend of the former vice-president of the European Parliament, Francesco Giorgi, was also arrested two months before he went to the power of the electric bracelet.

Belgian authorities carried out the first raid and arrest on December 9, 2022, after seizing 1.5 million euros. Qatar and Morocco refuse to take part in the case.
